Prison Sentences for Corrupt Officials

The criminal court of Cairo passed on September 25, 2008 imprisonment sentences with hard labour on ex-parliament member who belongs to the ruling party and 5 high officials of the "Petroleum Public Authority" who are accused of receiving together bribes in the amount of one million dollars in return for providing some oil companies with confidential petroleum sites in the Egyptian desert. The prison terms ranged from 10 to 3 years. The accused were dismissed from their jobs and they had to pay heavy fines. The trial began in October 2006.
