Strengthening the Role of the National Anti-Corruption Commission in Lebanon: Needs, Challenges, and Existing Opportunities

Beirut, Lebanon, 4/19/2023 - 4/19/2023

Organized by:

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) in the Lebanese Republic is organizing a strategic workshop on Wednesday April 19, 2023, at the Mövenpick Hotel, Beirut. The purpose of this strategic workshop is to explore possible ways to activate the commission's work, based on its priorities, challenges and opportunities within the current national context. This workshop is being held in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and with the joint support of the European Union and the government of the Kingdom of Denmark. Ambassadors and representatives from partner states, as well as international and regional organizations working to promote integrity and anti-corruption, will participate, along with relevant experts and public officials.
Our aim is to establish a joint platform for better coordinated and more effective cooperation between the NACC and the international partners, with a view to strengthening our capacity to carry out our roles and responsibilities according to applicable laws, rising up to public expectations and meeting the priorities outlined in the National Anti-Corruption Strategy and Lebanon's international commitments, especially those related to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), and the Reform, Recovery and Reconstruction Framework (3RF) supported by the World Bank, the United Nations and the European Union.
The first session of the workshop will focus on reviewing Lebanon's anti-corruption commitments and the role of the NACC in supporting and monitoring their implementation. This will be followed by a discussion on the progress made in this regard, based on relevant reports, including the NACC's first annual report and other reports issued within the national and international frameworks mentioned above. The second session provides an opportunity for an in-depth dialogue on the requirements for activating the NACC's role in the upcoming phase. It will also highlight potential prospects for cooperation with all partners to benefit from their expertise and resources within a unified vision that aligns with national priorities and international commitments. The ensuing discussion will be based on the conclusions of the detailed action plan that the NACC will present during the workshop. This plan was developed in cooperation with the experts of the UNDP's Regional Office in the Arab Countries, as part of its partnership with the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and the UNDP's country office team in Lebanon, under the framework of the Anti-Corruption for Trust in Lebanon project (ACT Lebanon). This project is implemented with the support of the European Union and the Government of the Kingdom of Denmark.
